Lebanese-British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has been nominated for the 2017 Tipperary International Peace Prize.

The barrister with Doughty Street Chambers in London is now in line to become the latest recipient of a prize awarded to the likes of Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai since 1983.

According to The Irish Times, the other nominees are Fr Pádraig Devine, founder of the Shalom Centre; former Northern Ireland deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness; Amnesty Ireland; the Syrian White Helmets; and Lebanese activist Lady Rabab al Sadr.

Last year’s prize went to US Secretary of State John Kerry.
