Charities to benefit from virtual advocacy training workshop

Around 170 charities, NGOs and civic society groups are due to participate in a virtual advocacy training workshop hosted by The Bar of Ireland tomorrow.

The “Speaking for Ourselves: Digital Advocacy & Engagement with Policymakers” workshop has been organised by the Bar as part of its Voluntary Assistance Scheme (VAS), which provides assistance to charities on a wide range of legal areas.

Anne Rabbitte, the government minister with responsibility for disability, will present on the topic of “Engaging with the Government from a Distance”.

Philip O’Callaghan, special adviser to the Tánaiste, will address the workshop on “Getting the Government’s Attention in the Midst of the Pandemic”.

Meanwhile, Ms Justice Una Ní Raifeartaigh and barrister Nuala Butler SC will present on oral advocacy and the art of persuading an audience.

James Browne, the minister for law reform, will chair a Q&A session with the political contributors.

Lewis Mooney, VAS coordinator, said: “Central to the work of The Bar of Ireland’s Voluntary Assistance Scheme is the absolute belief that every voice should be heard.

“With many charities seeing an increased demand for support as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we believe it is vital that they are equipped with the knowledge and tools that will allow them to adapt to these new ways of working and continue lifting up their stories and advocating for the solutions our communities need.

“Our ‘Speaking for Ourselves: Digital Advocacy & Engagement with Policymakers’ virtual workshop is about supporting charities, NGOs and civic society groups to make the essential changes they should be making as they plan for the future operations and to build a blueprint for the rest of the year and beyond.”
