Dozens of driving test inspectors hired ahead of new laws

As many as 67 new driving test inspectors are being hired by the Department of Transport ahead of the introduction of new stricter road traffic laws, the Irish Independent reports.

The Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill, which gives power to gardaí to seize a car driven by an unaccompanied learner driver, will be signed into law shortly.

The Department of Transport is also considering other measures, including overtime and further recruitment, to ensure the law can be enforced.

The other provisions of the law include penalties for anyone who allows a learner driver to drive their car unaccompanied, and stricter drink-driving rules that will see an automatic three-month ban for anyone found driving while over the limit.

The bill came under sharp criticism from some rural independent TDs who who said it would have a disproportionate impact on young people in rural Ireland.
