Flanagan ‘concerned’ by contents of report into prison surveillance

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has said he is concerned by the preliminary findings of the Inspector of Prisons on allegations of covert surveillance in Irish prisons.
Patricia Gilheaney was asked by Mr Flanagan last November to examine allegations that private conversations between solicitors and prisoners were covertly monitored by gardaí.
The allegations were included in a sworn affidavit from a serving prison officer and were first reported in the Irish Examiner.
Ms Gilheaney completed her report in April.
Mr Flanagan, speaking at the Prison Officers’ Association (POA) conference in Sligo today, said he was concerned by its contents and will consider action once it has been reviewed by the Attorney General.
