Garda launches bid to stop investigation into alleged media leak

A senior Garda has launched a legal bid to stop an inquiry into allegations that he passed sensitive information to the media.

Supt David Taylor, former press chief for An Garda Síochána, is being investigated for alleged breaches of section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 and the Data Protection Act 1998.

He has applied to the High Court in Dublin for leave to launch judicial review proceedings against the Garda Commissioner and theDirector of Public Prosecutions.

Breffni Gordon SC, acting for Supt Taylor, told the court that there was “a certain element of skullduggery taking place”.

In a sworn affidavit, Supt Taylor claimed that evidence had been tampered with and the investigation into him was personally motivated.

He said the investigation was “tainted beyond redemption” and wanted an injunction to prevent the DPP and Garda Commissioner from taking further disciplinary or criminal proceedings.

The case will come back before the High Court in two weeks.
