Garda survey records four-year low in victimisation rate

The number of people who say they have been a victim of crime in the past year fell to a four-year low at the end of last year, The Times reports.

The latest Garda Public Attitudes Survey revealed that only 4.5 per cent of around 1,500 respondents said they had been a victim of crime in the past year.

The figure stood at 7.8 per cent last June and peaked at 11 per cent in 2015.

Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey said the fall in the victimisation rate was “very welcome”.

He added: “This is a tribute to the great work of our people throughout the country. We increased the number of Guards on the front-line in 2018 to enhance visibility in communities. This will be a key focus again in 2019 as will delivering policing services in line with the individual needs of communities.”
