Inspection report finds Tusla failing to notify gardaí of suspected child abuse

Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, is failing to report suspected child abuse cases in south Dublin to gardaí in a timely manner, according to a new inspection report.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has published its findings on the fostering and child protection and welfare services operated by Tusla in the Dublin South Central service area.

The HIQA report notes that there have been improvements in making notifications to gardaí since a previous report in September 2018, but that the remain “in the early stages of implementation”.

Inspectors reviewed 21 referrals where a notification to gardaí was required and found that notifications had only been made in eight (38 per cent) of them. Five were awaiting notification since 2018.

Jim Gibson, chief operations officer at Tusla, said: “We accept the findings of this report, and welcome HIQA’s acknowledgement that we have made important headway in implementing a range of measures to reform fostering services across the country.”

Mr Gibson said the issues are “being actively addressed through detailed service improvement plans and Tusla’s overall programme of transformation”.
