NI: John Finucane addresses New York lawyers on Stormont deal and Brexit

Lawyer and politician John Finucane yesterday addressed lawyers in New York on the restoration of devolution in Northern Ireland and the challenges posed by Brexit.

Mr Finucane, the recently-elected Sinn Féin MP for Belfast North, tackled a range of issues at the New York City Bar Association event co-sponsored by the Brehon Law Society and Leitner Center for International Law and Justice.

The event, entitled “Delivering the Promise of the Good Friday Agreement”, covered the current political climate, the recent deal to re-establish devolution, and his thoughts on the growing demand for Irish unity and the need to plan for a peaceful and democratic transition.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Finucane said: “The peace process has always had a great level of support from America, especially from the legal community.

“Their advocacy and activism in fighting rights injustices on our island is widely recognised and remains as important.”
