Judges claim over €1 million in expenses in first half of the year

Judges claimed over €1 million in expenses in the first half of 2019, slightly less than in the same period last year, according to new Courts Service figures.

The judiciary claimed €1.02 million between January and June 2019, a small decline from €1.088 million over the same period in 2018, The Irish Times reports.

The highest claim was by Judge Francis Comerford in the Circuit Court, who received €44,476, made up of €29,410 in subsistence, €13,786 in travel and €1,279 in incidentals including judicial attire.

Separate figures show that the total salary bill for the judiciary totalled €26 million in 2018, down from €26.79 million in 2017. The bill will rise significantly this year following the increase in judicial salaries in April 2019.
