Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly sworn in to Court of Appeal
Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly has been elevated to the Court of Appeal and will replace Ms Justice Mary Irvine, who has joined the Supreme Court.
Ms Justice Donnelly attended the swearing in ceremony at the Supreme Court with her wife, Dr Susan Miner, The Irish Times reports.
The judge featured in the news last year after she sought guidance from the European Court of Justice over a case involving a Polish national, which brought into question changes in that country’s judicial system and the rule of law and prompted a strong reaction from Polish authorities.
Some outlets in Poland made personal attacks on Ms Justice Donnelly, which led to the Association of Judges of Ireland issuing a robust defence of their colleague.
She was educated at University College Dublin, was called to the bar in 1988 and has served as co-chair of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.
