Refurbishment of Carndonagh courthouse 'put on the long finger' after March closure

The refurbishment of Carndonagh Courthouse has been put “on the long finger” after its closure in March, a local councillor has suggested.

Court sittings in Carndonagh were relocated to Buncrana at the start of March to allow for the courthouse to be examined and eventually refurbished.

However, the Courts Service said at the time that it would also look to identify an alternative venue in Carndonagh during the closure of the courthouse.

Cllr Albert Doherty, who represents Carndonagh on Donegal County Council, told Highland Radio: “The venue in the interim hasn’t been identified – I am aware there have been visits – and I have not seen any evidence of the work yet.”

He said: “There’s always a fear that a lack of prioritising of the work might put it on the long finger. People in the business sector in Carndonagh appreciate court day, they appreciate the business that they get.”

The councillor added: “It’s also a rural service, serving constituents and those who use the courts in the northern part of the peninsula. We want it retained in Carndonagh.”
