Retired Omagh solicitor Pat Fahy has been awarded €10,000 in damages after suffering psychological damage as a result of his hotel room being robbed.

Mr Fahy was staying in the North Star Hotel in Amiens Street during a visit to Dublin for the All-Ireland Quarter Final match between Tyrone and Mayo in July 2016.

While he was asleep, his room was robbed of his mobile phone, around €150 and his match tickets.

The robber gained access to the room through the balcony door, which Mr Fahy left open without realising the balcony was shared with other rooms.

Mr Fahy launched proceedings against B.C. McGettigan Limited, trading as the North Star Hotel, in Dublin Circuit Civil Court.

He told the court that it took two years for him to recover from the psychological impact of the robbery, the Irish Independent reports.

Mr Justice Raymond Groarke, president of the Circuit Court, said Mr Fahy should have been warned that the room’s balcony was shared.

He awarded €10,200 in damages to Mr Fahy.
