Top Scottish advocate called to Irish Bar

Aidan O'Neill QC

Prominent Scottish advocate Aidan O’Neill QC has been called to The Bar of Ireland.

Mr O’Neill, who is also qualified in England and Wales, is a leading constitutional lawyer in the UK. He has been involved in high-profile Brexit litigation, including the case which led the UK Supreme Court to rule that the prorogation of Parliament was unlawful.

By calling to the Irish Bar, he will maintain his rights of audience in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), Ampersand Advocates said.

His solicitor colleagues, however, have been denied the same privilege. The Law Society of Ireland has made clear that solicitors without a base in Ireland will be denied practising certificates.
