Two prisoners bidding for release after suspended sentences ruling

Two prisoners are bidding to be released from prison in the wake of the High Court’s ruling on suspended sentences ruling on Tuesday.

The pair appeared before Mr Justice Seamus Noonan yesterday, who granted an application on behalf of the State for the proceedings to be adjourned until today, the Irish Independent reports.

They will argue before Mr Justice Paul McDermott for their release under article 40 of the Constitution.

Michael P O’Higgins SC, acting for one applicant, said a remand order for purposes of activation of a sentence suspension was the sole basis for his client’s detention.
