US: Judge rules Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell can be summonsed by email

A judge in Manhattan has ruled that a summons can be served by email to British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, a former associate of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Lawyers for Annie Farmer, who alleges that she was trafficked and sexually abused by Maxwell and Epstein, said they have tried to serve the 58-year-old with a complaint since November 2019 but have been unable to locate her.

Judge Debra Freeman last week granted a motion to allow the summons and complaint to be served by email, the New York Post reports.

Maxwell has until Friday 6 March to respond to the lawsuit otherwise a default judgment will be placed against her.

Ms Farmer is seeking undisclosed damages in the lawsuit, one of a number of proceedings lodged against Maxwell after the death of her long-time friend Jeffrey Epstein last August while he was awaiting trial for the sex trafficking of minors.
