Jerry Buting, star lawyer from hit documentary series Making a Murderer, will speak at the European Young Bar Association’s Spring conference in Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Young Solicitors Association (NIYSA) is bringing the conference to Northern Ireland for only the third time on 7-9 April 2016.

Mr Buting said: “Having dedicated my life to the legal profession, I am grateful to be able to attend such a wonderful event and help young lawyers in any way I can. I’m acutely aware of the challenges facing young lawyers in today’s world, so I’m always keen to pass on any useful advice I may have received over the years.

“Belfast is a wonderful city which has really progressed in recent years, and, in addition, I have family ties in Co. Antrim so I’m genuinely excited for the event and trip to Northern Ireland.”

Julie-Ann McCaffrey, chair of NIYSA, said she was “exceptionally proud to have been able to bring an event of this magnitude to Belfast”.

She said: “With the help of our sponsors, Herbert Smith Freehills, Brightwater Recruitment, Cleaver Fulton Rankin, the Law Society of NI and the Bar Library, lawyers from all across Europe and further afield will get to sample this wonderful event and explore some of what Belfast has to offer.

“Having Jerry Buting on board as a guest speaker will add plenty of excitement to the event, so we hope for excellent support and turn out. The Making a Murderer series was the first documentary of its kind to obtain international interest and provide a unique insight into court room trials.

“I have no doubt many attendees will be enthused at the prospect at hearing Jerry speak and asking questions on the notorious case.”

Mr Buting added: “I would like to congratulate Julie-Ann and the Northern Ireland Young Solicitors’ Association for earning the chance to host the European Young Bar event.

“The Stephen Avery case was exceptionally challenging and ultimately disappointing, however, the Making a Murderer documentary has captured the public imagination and has got many young people interested in the legal profession once more.”
