NI: 21-year-old NI woman charged with abortion offences
A 21-year-old woman from Co Down will be tried for offences under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 after allegedly procuring an abortion.
The woman appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday in relation to one charge of using the drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol with intent to procure a miscarriage for herself, and one charge of supplying or procuring a poison for the purpose of procuring a miscarriage.
The alleged offences were committed from June-July 2014.
The woman reportedly confirmed that she understood the charges against her and declined to give evidence or call witnesses.
District Judge Fiona Bagnall ruled that there was a case to answer and released the defendant on £500 bail.
