Abortion law review expected to recommend significant changes
An independent review led by barrister Marie O’Shea BL is expected to recommend significant changes to Ireland’s abortion laws.
Ms O’Shea was appointed last January to lead the second phase of the review required under section 7 of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018.
According to The Irish Times, her report is now complete and will be brought to the Cabinet by health minister Stephen Donnelly early next week with a view to publication shortly thereafter.
The report is said to recommend changes to criminal law to exclude the possibility of medical practitioners being prosecuted where they provide abortion services outside of the rules laid out in law.
It is also expected to recommend the removal of the requirement for a three-day waiting period before abortion care is provided, and to allow more easy access to abortion in the case of fatal foetal abnormality.
