NI: Academics ‘concerned about Brexit human rights consequences’ for Northern Ireland
Academics at Northern Ireland’s universities have expressed concern over the “serious implications” of Brexit for human rights and equality.
Six preliminary reports on the impact of Brexit have been published online by BrexitLawNI, a collaborative research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
The project involves the Law Schools of Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University, as well as prominent human rights group, the Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ).
Speaking about the research, Professor Colin Harvey told Irish Legal News: “We have now launched our Preliminary Findings Reports and we hope that they will prove useful to the current constitutional conversation about the consequences of Brexit across the six areas of our project.
“In particular we are concerned about the serious implications for human rights and equality and whether the often cited unique circumstances of Northern Ireland are genuinely understood and will be fully reflected in the negotiations.
“These are our initial thoughts, and we include some possible solutions in there too. Over the coming months we will be discussing this further as the project advances.”
Professor Harvey (pictured) added: “Further information about how to get in contact with us is available on our project website.”
