And finally... marriage of convenience

A judge has annulled a marriage where the bride was tricked into going along with what she believed was a fake wedding organised as a social media prank.

The woman said she was invited to what she was told was a “white party” — where everyone is expected to wear white — by a man she had met on a dating app three months beforehand.

However, on her arrival at the venue, she said she discovered that the man had “organised a wedding” and she was the only one wearing white.

She confronted the man, who she said reassured her that he had organised the “simple prank” as a social media stunt aimed at “monetising his Instagram page”.

It was only after the wedding, when the man allegedly asked her to add his name to her application for permanent residency, that she learned it was a real and legally-binding wedding, she said.

A family court in Melbourne, Australia annulled the December 2023 marriage in October 2024, The Guardian reports.

The judge said the man’s account of events “beggars belief” and it “made no sense to me” that the woman, who was religious, would go along with a non-religious shotgun wedding.
