And finally… poison pen

Fake lawyers bearing drug-soaked letters have been taking advantage of legal mail privileges in a prison to smuggle narcotics to addicted inmates.

A report on HMP Wealstun, in West Yorkshire, found letters are being sprayed with new psychoactive substances including Spice.

Prison officers are now photocopying letters before handing them over – throwing up a separate legal issue – namely that legal letters should only be opened by the addressee.

The Independent Monitoring Board said: “Where there is suspicion that incoming letters have been soaked in drugs, they are photocopied.

“This has resulted in an increase in complaints from prisoners, as bogus Legal Mail is a significant problem and Legal Mail should not be opened.

“Prisoners found guilty at adjudications of taking drugs are offered drugs courses.”
