And finally… sitting on a goldmine
A former employee of the Royal Canadian Mint has been jailed for 30 months for stealing gold coins — by hiding them in his rectum.
Leston Lawrence, 35, stole CA$165,451 in 22 pieces.
He was caught after selling the coins at Ottawa Gold Buyers.
Judge Peter Doody ordered the thief to pay a fine of CA$145,900 and ruled that he should serve a further 30 months if he fails to pay the sum within three years of release.
Investigators discovered latex gloves and vaseline in Lawrence’s lockers, items which Judge Doody said “could have been used to facilitate insertion of gold items inside his rectum”, the Toronto Star reports.
Lawrence, who was convicted of conveying gold out the mint as well as breach of trust by public official, used his ill-gotten gains to buy a house in Jamaica and a boat in Florida.
His job had been to purify gold.
