A nun has reportedly been arrested by Italian police on suspicion of colluding with the mafia.

Sister Anna Donelli, a 57-year-old nun who volunteers in Milan’s San Vittore prison, is suspected of carrying messages between the ‘Ndrangheta mafia and its imprisoned members.

The widely-respected nun was recently awarded the “Golden Panettone” by Milan’s city council in recognition of her good works, RTÉ News reports.

She is said to have been arrested in the same raid where police arrested two local politicians and seized some €1.8 million in cash.

The arrestees are suspected of mafia association, vote buying, illegal possession of weapons, money laundering, loan-sharking, drug dealing and false invoicing, among other crimes.
