Bar of NI launches new rule of law event series

The Bar of Northern Ireland’s rule of law committee has announced the commencement of a new series of events and discussions, the “Advancing the Rule of Law Series”.

The aim of the “Advancing The Rule of Law Series” is to encourage awareness of the importance of the rule of law and, with the assistance of recognised experts and thought leaders, to stimulate debate around its operation both domestically and internationally.

The series will begin with a panel discussion on the Illegal Migration Bill, which is being considered at committee stage by the House of Lords at present.

The panel discussion will take place on Tuesday 20 June 2023 at 4pm–5.45pm in the Inn of Court, Royal Courts of Justice, Belfast.

Chaired by Bernard Brady KC, the discussion will involve speakers including Alyson Kilpatrick, chief commissioner for the NI Human Rights Commission, Ronan Lavery KC and MP for South Belfast, Claire Hanna MP.

The panel will explore the implications of the Illegal Migration Bill for the UK’s existing international law obligations as well as issues concerning the relationship between law and morality and the role of legal professionals in raising rule of law concerns during the legislative process.

This event is free to attend but with places limited, booking is essential. Please email lisa.mayes@barofni.org to register your attendance.
