Barrister and solicitor to be elevated to the bench
Ministers have agreed to nominate barrister John Martin for appointment as a Circuit Court judge and solicitor Vincent Deane as a District Court judge.
The Circuit Court vacancy arises following the retirement of Judge Petria McDonnell last month, while the vacancy on the District Court will arise following the retirement of Judge Conal M. Gibbons next month.
The government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional practice.
Mr Martin was educated at University College Dublin and the King’s Inns before calling to the Bar in 1997. He is an accredited mediator and a trained collaborative lawyer.
Mr Deane was educated at GMIT Galway, NUIG and the Law Society of Ireland before qualifying as a solicitor in 2001. He worked in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions from 2005 to 2010, and then as State Solicitor for Co Mayo from 2010 until this year.
