Barristers to debate balance of victims’ rights versus suspects’ rights
Two prominent barristers are set to take part in a debate later this month on how victims’ and suspects’ rights can be reconciled.
Maria McDonald BL, a founding member of the Victims’ Rights Alliance (VRA), will discuss the issue with Mary Rose Gearty SC, vice-chairman of the Bar Council of Ireland, at an event hosted by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL).
The discussion will be moderated by journalist Conor Gallagher, who recently covered the Belfast rugby rape trial for The Irish Times.
The widely-followed nine-week trial before Belfast Crown Court ended with Ulster and Ireland rugby players Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding being found not guilty of raping a woman.
The debate will consider how the “seemingly opposing sets of rights” of the accused and the accuser can be balanced in the legal system.
It will take place at The Bar of Ireland on Monday 14 May, 4.30pm-6pm, and free tickets are available from EventBrite.
