BBC programme to put spotlight on Hooded Men’s torture
A special hour-long programme about the UK government’s use of torture against the so-called “Hooded Men” is to be broadcast by the BBC tonight.
Hooded Men – Britain’s Torture Playbook, to be aired on BBC One in Northern Ireland tonight at 10.40pm, “reveals the full horror of one of the darkest episodes in British intelligence history”.
In 1971, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) controversially ruled that the 14 men were subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment but not torture.
The court has rejected bids — including in 2018 — to have the judgment revised. Human rights campaigners maintain that the treatment of the Hooded Men was torture.
The new BBC programme includes first-hand testimony from the Hooded Men and interviews with “senior members of the British security forces”, as well as information from declassified government documents.
