Belfast solicitor to observe Zimbabwe elections
A former president of the Law Society of Northern Ireland has been appointed to join a team of international observers for elections taking place in Zimbabwe later this month.
Brian Speers, the managing partner in Belfast-based CMG Cunningham Dickey, will join distinguished colleagues in the Commonwealth Observer Group, who have been tasked with observing the elections and reporting to the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Mr Speers, as well as having extensive international legal experience, is the immediate past president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Group (CLG), having held the position for four years.
Zimbabweans will head to the polls on Wednesday 23 August to elect a president as well as members of the National Assembly and Senate. It will be the country’s first election since a disputed 2018 vote held in the aftermath of the 2017 coup which removed Mugabe from power.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Speers said: “I am deeply honoured to have been asked to participate in the Commonwealth Observer Group and to help observe the Zimbabwe Harmonised Elections in August.”
