Bill to empower Policing Authority could pass despite Government opposition
A bill to significantly enhance the powers of the Policing Authority may pass despite the Government’s opposition, The Irish Times reports.
Jim O’Callaghan, Fianna Fáil’s justice spokesperson, has tabled legislation to give the Authority power to sack gardaí and be informed of all Garda Commissioner audits.
Although Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan opposes the bill, it has backing from Sinn Féin, meaning it could pass the Dáil.
Mr Flanagan has warned that the bill has “multiple issues and flaws” which he had discussed with the Attorney General.
