Bluesky examining its compliance with EU law
Bluesky has said it is seeking legal guidance on compliance with EU law after the European Commission said it was failing to comply with transparency rules.
The social media platform does not yet have 45 million monthly users in the EU, which is the threshold for designation as a very large online platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
However, a spokesperson for the European Commission said Bluesky is nonetheless required to “have a dedicated page on their website where it says how many users they have in the EU and where they are legally established”.
“This is not the case for Bluesky as of today — this is not followed,” they added.
A spokesperson for Bluesky told Bloomberg that the company is now consulting a lawyer on its obligations under EU law and is working to bring itself in compliance.
Bluesky is a privately-owned business headquartered in the US. It is classified as a “public benefit corporation” in US law.
