NI: Brendan McGuigan to serve as Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice for extra year
The Department of Justice has extended the appointment of Brendan McGuigan, the Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice for Northern Ireland, for an extra year.
Mr McGuigan, who has held the position since 2012, will now remain in post until 29 November 2019.
Since September 2017, he has also taken on the work of the Prisoner Ombudsman’s office and will continue to do so until a successor is appointed.
The extension of Mr McGuigan’s, made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Northern Ireland, will prevent the role from becoming vacant in the absence of a Northern Ireland Executive to appoint a successor.
Peter May, permanent secretary for the Department of Justice, said: “Both the Chief Inspector and the Prisoner Ombudsman posts play a vital role in seeking to secure improvement of, and confidence in, the criminal justice system.
“Brendan’s wealth of knowledge and expertise will provide important continuity during this period of political uncertainty.”
