Brexit motion carries the day at King’s Inns McCarthy debate
A motion calling for Ireland to join Britain in exiting the EU carried the day in a light-hearted debate hosted by the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.
The 2018 McCarthy Impromptu Debate, named in honour of the late Supreme Court judge Mr Justice Niall McCarthy, took place on Wednesday evening.
With the sides allocated randomly by lot, full-time students Arthur Griffin and Patrick Fitzgerald, and modular 1 student Deirdre Moore, debated: “This house believes that Brexit is a wonderful idea and that Ireland should also join the UK Exodus from the EU.”
Mr Griffin carried the day on behalf of the motion as judged by Mr Justice Binchy, Mr Justice Barniville, and David Nolan SC.
The debate was followed by dinner and was well attended by students.
This light-hearted debate takes place each year at King’s Inns in honour of the memory of the late judge and his wife Barbara, who both died tragically in a car accident in 1992.
The debate is one of two ways in which King’s Inns marks the life and contribution to the legal world of the McCarthys. The other is via the McCarthy Bursary, details of which can be found on the King’s Inns website. As this marks the 15th anniversary of the bursary, many past bursary recipients attended the debate and dinner.
