Cabinet to debate speeding penalties based on how fast motorist was driving

Shane Ross

Motorists caught speeding will be penalised based on how fast they were driving under a new road traffic law to be discussed by Cabinet today, the Irish Independent reports.

Transport Minister Shane Ross will seek approval from his Government colleagues today for a new Road Traffic Bill 2018.

The proposed bill will transform the current law, under which all speeding motorists face the same penalty of a €80 fine and three penalty points, and a fine of up to €1,000 and five penalty points in the event of non-payment.

Under Mr Ross’s proposals, penalties for speeding will be divided into bands, with increased penalties for more serious offenders.
