Cable TV providers could be forced to hand subscriber data to license fee enforcers
Communications Minister Denis Naughten is considering legislation to force cable TV providers to hand over subscriber data to the Revenue Commissioners to help enforce the TV license fee, the Sunday Independent reports.
Mr Naughten is reportedly contemplating the move as part of a package of measures to clamp down on TV license non-payment.
It would be achieved by introducing legislation which would see the likes of Sky, Virgin and Eir provide An Post with their subscriber data.
A spokesperson for Mr Naughten told the Sunday Independent: “A decision on which measures might be pursued will only be taken once the minister has fully considered the available options.”
Spokespersons for Sky and Virgin indicated their opposition to or concerns about the proposed law.
A spokesperson for Sky said: “We note the Department of Communications’ potential policy initiatives to deal with TV licence fee evasion, and has made its views clear to the department on this issue.
“We will continue to ensure that customer data is safe in compliance with all legislative requirements applicable.”
In a statement, Virgin added: “A piece of legislation such as this would require significant review and discussion at industry level, to ensure the privacy rights of individuals were suitably protected, while endeavouring to balance the needs of the State where appropriate.”
Eir said it took its customers’ privacy seriously.
