Solicitor found guilty of €400 theft from defendant

Criminal defence solicitor Cahir O’Higgins has been convicted of stealing €400 from a client and attempting to pervert the court of justice.
O’Higgins, 49, denied the five charges — one of theft and four of attempting to pervert the court of justice — but was found guilty by a jury on Friday, RTÉ News reports.
The court heard that a Spanish man represented by O’Higgins was invited to make a €200 payment to avoid a conviction for criminal damage.
O’Higgins accepted that he went to the ATM with the man’s bank card and withdrew €600, of which €200 was paid to the court.
The man subsequently complained that the other €400 was missing. O’Higgins denied having stolen the cash.
Following his conviction on Friday, Judge Martin Nolan remanded O’Higgins in custody for sentencing later this month.
