Campaigners keep up pressure to have Sexual Offences Bill passed

Campaigners from The Turn Off The Red Light coalition met in Dublin yesterday to urge the Government to avoid further delay in passing the Criminal Justice (Sexual Offences) Bill which would criminalise the purchase of sex as Northern Ireland did last year.

The coalition, representing 70 organisations, wants to see Ireland introduce a Nordic model to tackle the sex trade which is estimated to be worth 250 million euros annually to criminal gangs who control the industry.

The Bill is now at second stage in Dáil Éireann and has attracted considerable cross-party support.

The Department of Justice said: “It was evident from the debates in Seanad Éireann, and to the extent that the Bill was considered in Dáil Éireann, that the Bill received wide cross-party support.

Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald considers it the highest legislative priority for the new Dáil term.”
