Client thanks legal team after manslaughter conviction certified ‘miscarriage of justice’
A man whose conviction for manslaughter was overturned 38 years later has thanked his legal team for securing a formal apology.
The State formally apologised to Martin Conmey, 65, before the High Court yesterday, certifying his conviction as a miscarriage of justice.
Mr Conmey was convicted of manslaughter in 1973 and jailed for three years. He was eventually acquitted of the crime in 2010.
Shane Murphy SC read the apology before Mr Justice Séamus Noonan and told the court that compensation would be offered.
Speaking afterwards, Mr Conmey said: “I accept and appreciate the State’s apology.”
He thanked his lawyers at Tallans Solicitors, particularly Sheila Cooney and Deirdre Moran, and barristers Hugh Hartnett, Micheál O’Higgins and Aaron Shearer.
