Conference to bring together experts on police custody in Ireland
A forthcoming conference will bring together experts to discuss police custody in Ireland for the first time.
Taking place in Blackhall Place on 29 and 30 September 2022, the conference will hear from gardaí, members of the Garda Inspectorate and the Policing Authority, representatives of NGOs, academics from universities across Ireland and the UK and international experts.
Dr Vicky Conway of Dublin City University (DCU), who is organising the event, told Irish Legal News: “What happens in police custody in Ireland has received very limited attention in public discourse to date. The recent Garda Inspectorate report shows that there are significant concerns about human rights compliance in this space.
“We’re delighted to be bringing together those at the forefront of researching this issue to help us to develop our thinking, and to hopefully inform the forthcoming Police Powers Bill which will update regulation in this space.
“The conference will be of interest to gardaí, solicitors, barristers, judges, politicians, academics and those who work with people who find themselves in custody.”
Tickets and more information about the conference are available from Eventbrite.
