Court of Appeal president calls for 'urgent' appointments

The new president of the Court of Appeal has called for new appeal judges to be appointed urgently, The Irish Times reports.

Mr Justice George Birmingham (pictured), who was sworn in yesterday, said the number of judges needed to be increased because the waiting time for appeals still stands at 20 months.

Mr Justice Birmingham described vacancies on the bench as an “immediate crisis” facing him in the role.

Two judges retired this year and have not been replaced, while three more judges are set to retire or take up new positions later this year.

Mr Justice Birmingham said this caused particular problems in allocating cases, as complex appeals involving reserved judgments could not be allocated to judges leaving within months.

He also suggested legislative reform to allow judges to deliver judgments after their retirement on cases they heard before retirement.
