Courts Service backs ‘centralisation’ of probate system

The Courts Service of Ireland has endorsed a paper recommending an overhaul in Ireland’s probate system to slash current waiting times of up to 24 weeks, the Sunday Business Post reports.
Key recommendations were presented to the board of the Courts Service by the Probate Services Review Group.
They include the introduction of a fast-tracking procedure for less complex grants and an IT overhaul to allow for online applications.
The report also acknowledges that this may lead to the “centralisation” of the probate system, with the closure of the 14 district probate offices which are currently open across the country.
A spokesperson for the Courts Service said that staffing shortages have already been dealt with and an action plan based on the review group’s report is due to be published shortly.
Extra resourcing from the Government will be required to implement some recommendations, particularly on IT upgrades, he added.
