Courts Service private parking issue escalates

Justice minister Helen McEntee is to be asked why the Courts Service enjoys a private parking arrangement outside Cork’s circuit courthouse building, the Irish Examiner reports.

The development follows a debate over the arrangement that arose after bollards were installed to protect the parking area beside the steps of the historic building.

The Courts Service told the newspaper that planning permission was not required. A spokesman for the Courts Service said the bollards were replacements for ones previously installed.

“This was done in conjunction with the OPW and replaces the older, damaged steel barriers that were in the same space,” the spokesman said.

The parking area came to the fore in 2020 after the newspaper reported that taxpayers were funding repairs to an area of footpath nearby which had been damaged due to years of illegal parking.

Green Party councillor Oliver Moran said his party colleague, Neasa Hourigan TD, will question Ms McEntee over the parking arrangement, and whether or not planning permission exists for a car park.
