Courts spend €6m on interpreter firms over five years
The Courts Service of Ireland spent more than €6 million on interpreter services over the past five years, the Sunday Independent reports.
A total of 63 companies were paid €6,233,400 to translate court proceedings into more than 200 languages since 2011.
That includes a total cost of €921,600 in 2015, with €731,000 going to only one firm.
However, the yearly figure has declined significantly from a high point of €1.6 million in 2011.
The cost comes from the need for specialists to translate proceedings into more exotic languages.
Over the past five years, the courts have had to translate proceedings into languages like Igbo, Edo, Cebuano, Tagalog and Chittagonian for foreign nationals involved in Irish court hearings.
