Crackdown on unregistered charity shops sees 11 face action
A crackdown on unregistered charity shops has seen seven change names, three close and one prosecuted since 2016.
The Charities Regulator, which has published an update on it work, received 28 complaints about shops believed to operating as charity shops.
Three of these were cleared of any wrongdoing after investigations while 11 faced action.
It is an offence for a store to call itself a charity or act in a way so as to make a member of the public think it is one, under the Charities Act 2009.
John Farrelly, CEO of the Charities Regulator, said stores should know the law.
“All charity shops must operate as part of a registered charity and all proceeds must go towards that charity’s charitable purpose,” he said.
