NI: Derry courthouse to be closed over summer
The Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunal Service (NICTS) has announced the closure of Derry Courthouse for most of July and August.
The building will close on 9 July and reopen at the beginning of September, with cases due to be heard in Derry to be heard in Omagh or Coleraine instead, a spokesperson for NICTS said.
The closure will allow for essential maintenance to be carried out.
Derry solicitor Kevin Casey of McCartney & Casey Solicitors told BBC News that the closure would cause huge disruption to clients.
Mr Casey said: “You are talking about parents involved in contact disputes, parents involved in youth court, people involved in petty sessions cases who are now being told they will have to travel 30 miles plus to another court house. These people are frequently in receipt of legal aid and don’t have access to private transport.”
