Detective who harassed State solicitor still receiving full pay in jail

A detective convicted of harassing a State solicitor by sending her abusive letters and emails is still receiving full pay in prison, the Sunday Independent reports.

Eve Doherty was given a three-year jail sentence by Judge Melanie Greally in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in January following a two-week trial last July.

However, she continues to draw down her monthly salary - of at least €2,000 a month - because she remains suspended on full pay.

According to sources, she is planning to appeal her suspension.

Ms Doherty was found guilty by a jury of harassing Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 in last year’s trial.

At the time, Ms Howlin worked with the Director of Public Prosecutions, where she was involved in deciding whether or not to direct prosecutions in criminal cases. Doherty was a detective sergeant and worked in the crime and security division of An Garda Síochána.

The trial heard that over 18 months, letters and emails were sent to Ms Howlin’s home, place of work and her GP calling her a “corrupt bitch”, an “incompetent useless hobbit” and a “two-faced bitch”.
