District Court president says financial strain causing rise in domestic violence cases
Judge Rosemary Horgan, the President of the District Court, has suggested financial strain is responsible for an increase in domestic violence cases coming before the District Courts.
The Irish Times reports that Judge Horgan made the remarks while commenting on new Courts Service figures showing a six per cent rise in domestic violence applications to the District Court last year.
She said: “I think we are not over the results of the recession.”
According to the annual report for 2015, was a 2 per cent increase in applications for safety orders (to 5,626) and a 16 per cent increase in applications for protection orders (to 5,108) last year.
Both orders can be applied to a co-habitating partner without forcing them to move out.
Judge Horgan said housing costs meant many couples continue to live together when “they are already parted in their minds”, leading to disputes over child-rearing and other matters.
