Egypt: Lawyer sparks outrage after ‘encouraging rape’
A prominent conservative lawyer in Egypt has sparked outrage by allegedly encouraging rape while speaking on a panel TV show.
Appearing on satellite TV channel Al-Assema, Nabih al-Wahsh said it was a “patriotic duty” to harass a woman wearing immodest clothing and a “national duty” to rape her.
Mr al-Wahsh made the remarks during a discussion on draft legislation concerning prostitution and the offence of “inciting debauchery”.
He later added: “Girls must respect themselves so others respect them. Protecting morals is more important than protecting borders.”
Egypt’s National Council for Women has submitted a complaint to the Attorney General about the defence lawyer’s conduct, as well as a complaint against the broadcaster for airing the remarks.
