Egyptian pop singer jailed for two years for ‘inciting debauchery’
An Egyptian singer has been handed a two-year jail sentence for “inciting debauchery” with a risqué music video clip.
Shyma, 21, was also fined 10,000 pounds by a court in Cairo.
The clip’s director, Mohamed Gamal, was given the same sentence.
The singer was arrested last month after complaints about the video for her song, I Have Issues.
She appears in her underwear in the song and suggestively consumes an apple and banana in a classroom full of young men.
“Singer Shyma presents a lesson in depravity to youths,” said the Youm 7 newspaper.
Shyma apologised for the video in a Facebook post, saying she did not expect the backlash the video would prompt.
“I didn’t imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone, as a young singer … who has dreamt from a young age of being a singer,” she wrote.
