England: Lawyer fined over sexist remarks about women barristers
A lawyer has been fined after he said female barristers were “hysterical” and “overemotional”.
Feliks Kwiatkowski, 66, who called to the bar in 1977, was fined £500 and reprimanded.
A disciplinary panel found that he told opposing counsel at a hearing at Worthing County Court: “You get stupid and unreasonable men in the profession, but the ground shifted — the number of incidents of over-egging the pudding and just going overboard in a routine situation multiplied.”
He described women barristers as being in general “hysterical” and “overemotional”. The opposing barrister, known as person X, told The Bar Tribunal and Adjudication Services that she moved away from Mr Kwiatkowski as she “felt shaken” and found the experience “unpleasant”.
Tribunal chairman Jonathan Glasson QC ruled that Mr Kwiatkowski’s behaviour was “seriously reprehensible” and “grave” and amounted to professional misconduct.
He was ordered to pay £500 in legal costs.
