England: Lord Falconer calls for Truss to be replaced and ‘change of course’
A former Lord Chancellor has called for the incumbent, Liz Truss, to be replaced in order to save the justice system.
Writing in The Brief, Lord Falconer of Thoroton, a former Lord Chancellor in the Blair government, said the bench is demoralised and that the justice system is on a “downward spiral”.
He wrote: “The new Lord Chancellor should make it clear that the government and the Ministry of Justice now take a different path from Liz Truss.”
The Labour peer added that “An urgent and identifiable change of course is required” as the justice system sees a new Lord Chief Justice and Supreme Court President take office this year.
“The trio will above all others determine how our justice system performs over the next four years,” he argued.
He also warned that the “Trump approach” to the judiciary, that of attacking unfavourable decisions, is rearing its head on these shores.
